The Three Tenors concert in Rome is now a genre of its own. Every Three Tenors Rome evening you can book today is a tribute: three tenors of an Italian company singing the arias and Neapolitan songs that Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti made famous at the Baths of Caracalla. This guide compares the tribute concerts side by side and helps you pick the right one. For every venue, see our guide to the opera houses in Rome.
Quick answer Tributes, not the original trio
The original Three Tenors concert was sung by Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti at the Baths of Caracalla on 7 July 1990, the evening before the World Cup final, with Zubin Mehta conducting. The Three Tenors concerts you can book in Rome today are tributes by today's singers, not the original trio. Most play at St Paul's Within the Walls on Via Nazionale.

Where the Three Tenors evenings play
Five of the six concerts sit in one small corner of central Rome. The sixth changes venue by booking. Here is the geography.
The main venue: Via Nazionale
-
St Paul's Within the Walls
Concert venue from $28.341.5 hours
The American Church in Rome, a striped brick Episcopal church by George Edmund Street with Burne-Jones mosaics in the apse. By evening it is Rome's busiest opera-concert venue, hosting most Three Tenors programmes as well as concert stagings of La Traviata.
Tip: About 5 minutes on foot from the Repubblica metro stop, our estimate. Concerts start after the last service, so doors open close to the start time.
-
Teatro dell'Opera di Roma
Opera house
The city's opera house, where the orchestra of the Teatro dell'Opera played in the 1990 concert recording. Its own orchestra shared the bill at Caracalla with the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under Zubin Mehta. The theatre sells its own season seats and guided tours, which we do not sell.
Tip: About 5 minutes from St Paul's Within the Walls on foot, our estimate, so you can pair a guided visit with an evening concert.
The original site, south of the centre
-
Baths of Caracalla
Historic site
The ancient bath complex where Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti sang on 7 July 1990, the evening before the World Cup final. Open-air opera ran here from 1937 to 1993 and returned in 2001. Today you can visit the ruins by day, and in summer the opera festival plays here or, in 2026, at the nearby Circus Maximus.
Tip: We sell the daytime visit of the Baths, never the festival seats, which the theatre sells directly.
If you want more than tenors
-
Palazzo della Cancelleria
Concert venue
The earliest Renaissance palace in Rome, closed to ordinary visitors because it houses Vatican courts. An hour of arias and duets is the only way inside. See our pick of the other opera concerts in Rome.
Tip: Two minutes from Campo de' Fiori on foot, our estimate.
-
Sant'Andrea della Valle
Church
The Theatine church where act 1 of Puccini's Tosca is set. Tosca aria concerts with an audio-guided church visit are sold here, a good second evening after a Three Tenors show.
Tip: Cover shoulders and knees for entry, and entry for a look is free.

The night three tenors sang at the Baths of Caracalla
Everything here traces back to a single concert in the summer of 1990. Knowing what happened there explains what the tributes are paying tribute to.
A welcome-back party that became a supergroup
The first Three Tenors concert was held at the ancient Baths of Caracalla in Rome on 7 July 1990, the eve of the FIFA World Cup final. Italian producer Mario Dradi conceived it with Elmar Kruse and Herbert Chappell, to raise money for the José Carreras International Leukemia Foundation and to welcome Carreras back to opera after successful treatment for leukemia. José Carreras, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti sang with Zubin Mehta conducting the orchestra of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the orchestra of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma.
A television audience of around 800 million watched. The recording of the concert became the best-selling classical album of all time and won the Grammy Award for Best Classical Vocal Performance in 1991. Pavarotti sang Nessun dorma alone, then sang it again as the encore, taking turns with Carreras and Domingo and joining them for the final Vincerò.
What came after, and where they sang
The trio performed at three further World Cup finals: Los Angeles in 1994, Paris in 1998 and Yokohama in 2002, usually in stadiums before huge audiences. Nearly 50,000 people attended the 1994 Dodger Stadium concert. They last performed together at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio on 28 September 2003.
The Baths themselves kept hosting summer opera until 1993, and the company returned there in 2001 on a movable stage. The festival still runs every summer under the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, which sells those seats itself. For the full story of the open-air years, read our guide to opera at the Baths of Caracalla.
Who sings the Three Tenors concerts in Rome today
No concert you can book in Rome features Carreras, Domingo or Pavarotti. Here is who actually stands on the stage and what they sing.

Tributes by today's companies
Two companies run Three Tenors programmes in Rome. Opera e Lirica fields three tenors with a string quartet and piano at St Paul's Within the Walls, singing Nessun dorma, O sole mio and the arias the 1990 concert made famous. Their listing carries the strongest record of any Three Tenors evening, rated 4.8 from 1,128 reviews.
Opera in Roma takes a lighter line: arias and Neapolitan songs with mandolin, grand piano and dancers, tarantellas included. Their format splits travellers. If you want the music front and centre, book the Opera e Lirica show. If you are travelling with children or want variety, the Opera in Roma evening earns its 4.5 rating.
How close is it to the real thing
Set expectations honestly. These are concert performances of arias and songs in a church or a hall, about 90 minutes, with piano and a small ensemble. Nobody is claiming to be Pavarotti. What you get is the repertoire of the 1990 concert, sung well, in a room a fraction of the size of the Baths, so every seat is close.
If you want full staged opera instead, the theatre's own season plays from autumn to early summer and moves outdoors in summer. See our page on Rome opera tickets for how seat prices work there, and opera concerts in Rome for the wider choice of arias evenings.
Nessun dorma and the songs you will hear
The Three Tenors programme is built around one aria and one Neapolitan song. Both have a story worth knowing before the first note.
Nessun dorma, from Puccini's Turandot
Nessun dorma closes act 3 of Puccini's Turandot. Calaf, the unknown prince, has answered the princess's three riddles, and sings in triumph that no one shall sleep until his name is guessed at dawn. The final lines build to a sustained high B and an even longer A, notes Puccini's score does not explicitly ask the singer to hold.
Pavarotti made the aria a pop anthem after the 1990 concert, and his recording reached number 2 in the UK singles chart. It was the theme of the BBC's World Cup coverage that summer. In concert he sang the role on stage only twice in his life. When you hear it in a Three Tenors tribute at St Paul's, you are hearing the song that carried opera to a sporting audience.
O sole mio and the rest of the programme
The other signature is O sole mio, which at the original concerts all three tenors typically sang together. Around these two anchors the tributes weave arias by Puccini and Verdi and Neapolitan songs, the mix that made the trio's repertoire range from opera to popular song.
The New Year's Day concert by Opera e Lirica adds Christmas songs and New Year waltzes to the same formula, running 80 minutes from 20:30 in the Methodist church on Via XX Settembre. Seats there are unnumbered and first come, first served, so arrive early for a central chair. It runs on 1 January only, and check the dates on the listing before booking.
Planning your Three Tenors evening in Rome
The logistics are easy because almost everything happens in one corner of the city centre. These are the details that matter on the day.
Getting there and getting in
St Paul's Within the Walls sits at Via Nazionale 16a, on the corner of Via Napoli, about 5 minutes on foot from the Repubblica metro stop, our estimate. The New Year's Day concert meets at the Methodist church on Via XX Settembre 122 C. For listings sold on Viator, tickets are collected at the church box office from one hour before the start.
It is a working church and concerts start after the last service, so doors open close to the concert time. Seating at St Paul's is by price category in rows of chairs in the nave, with the front rows costing more. Every listing here allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, which makes planning around weather and dinner easy.
What to wear and what to pair it with
The listed dress code at St Paul's church concerts is smart casual. There is no evening-dress expectation at these concerts, unlike opening nights at the opera house. Our page on the Rome opera dress code covers the full picture.
The evenings are short, about 90 minutes, which leaves room for dinner nearby. If you want the meal built in, look at opera dinner evenings in Rome. And if you are choosing a hotel, staying near Repubblica puts both the concerts and the opera house within a short walk. Our guide to where to stay in Rome for the opera explains the options.
Beyond the Three Tenors: opera in Rome all year
A Three Tenors evening is one door into opera in Rome. Here is how the rest of the year fits together.
The opera house season and the summer festival
The Teatro dell'Opera di Roma plays indoors from autumn to early summer, then moves outdoors for the summer festival. The house opened in November 1880 as the Teatro Costanzi and today seats 1,560. Cavalleria rusticana premiered there in 1890 and Tosca in January 1900, the opera whose aria opens every Three Tenors programme's cousin repertoire. The theatre sells its own seats and about one-hour guided tours itself, and we sell nothing for it. The cheapest published opera seat is $24.50 (€22) in the rear gallery.
For open-air summer opera, the company's festival plays at the Baths of Caracalla, or as in 2026 at the Circus Maximus while the Baths were under restoration. Bad weather never cancels a performance before its start time, and the theatre may delay it by up to 100 minutes.
Other concerts in churches and palaces
Rome's church and palace concerts run all year and need no Italian. Alongside the Three Tenors programmes, you can hear classical concerts in Rome such as Vivaldi's Four Seasons, or arias evenings in the Palazzo della Cancelleria, a Renaissance palace otherwise closed to visitors. For a first visit we would book one Three Tenors evening and one arias concert a few streets away, which together cost less than a mid-range opera house seat.
If you want a survey of all the venues, our homepage guide to opera houses in Rome maps them out, and our page on theatres in Rome covers the drama and musical houses too.

All of these sit within a short walk of Via Nazionale or the Aventine, so you can build a day around an evening concert.

Who were The Three Tenors?
They were an operatic trio active from 1990 to 2003: Italian Luciano Pavarotti and Spaniards Plácido Domingo and José Carreras. They began with a concert at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome on 7 July 1990, the evening before the World Cup final, watched on television by around 800 million people. Today's Three Tenors Rome concerts are tributes by other singers.
Are any of The Three Tenors alive today?
Carreras and Domingo continued performing after the trio's last concert together in Columbus, Ohio in 2003. Pavarotti has died, and his funeral was marked by a flypast by the Italian Air Force with his Decca recording of Nessun dorma played. None of the three performs in the tribute concerts bookable in Rome today.
Did the original Three Tenors sing for a fee?
The three had donated their fees for the 1990 Caracalla concert to charity, and the live album went on to become the best-selling classical record of all time. None of the original three sings in the tribute evenings sold in Rome today: compare those on the Three Tenors concerts at St Paul's card.
Which of The Three Tenors died?
Pavarotti is the member of the trio whose death is marked in our sources, with an Italian Air Force flypast at his funeral. Carreras and Domingo carried on with their own careers after the trio's final concert in 2003. The tribute concerts in Rome honour all three without claiming to replace any of them.
What is The Three Tenors' most famous piece?
Nessun dorma, the tenor aria from the final act of Puccini's Turandot. Pavarotti sang it at the 1990 concert and repeated it as the encore with Carreras and Domingo, and it became a sporting anthem. Hear it live at the Opera e Lirica Three Tenors evening at St Paul's in Rome.
Where was the original Three Tenors concert in Rome?
At the Baths of Caracalla, the ancient Roman bath complex on the Aventine, on 7 July 1990. Zubin Mehta conducted the orchestras of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. The Baths still host summer opera. Read our guide to opera at the Baths of Caracalla.
Are the Three Tenors concerts in Rome the original singers?
No. Every Three Tenors evening bookable in Rome is a tribute performed by today's tenors of companies such as Opera e Lirica and Opera in Roma, usually at St Paul's Within the Walls. The programmes recreate the repertoire, including Nessun dorma and O sole mio, in a church seating a few hundred rather than a stadium.
How much do Three Tenors tickets in Rome cost?
From $28.34 for the Opera in Roma Nessun Dorma evening to $45 for the New Year's Day concert, with the best-reviewed show at from $39. Every listing allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. Compare all six in the table above and see our page on Rome opera tickets for the opera house.
