What St Paul's Within the Walls is and why it matters
A Gothic Revival church that doubles as Rome's busiest opera-concert hall. Knowing both roles makes the evening easier to choose.
The first Protestant church in Rome
Building a Protestant church inside Rome only became possible after the Kingdom of Italy took the city from the Papacy in 1870. The Episcopal congregation commissioned the English architect George Edmund Street in 1872, the cornerstone was laid in 1873 and the church was inaugurated in 1876 in polychrome brick and stone. It is known as the American Church in Rome and stands on Via Nazionale at number 16a, corner of Via Napoli.
That history explains the building. The striped brick and the tall Gothic nave look nothing like the baroque churches nearby, and the acoustics work well for a small orchestra. It is a working parish: concerts start after the last service, and the church also runs the Joel Nafuma Refugee Center, a day centre for refugees founded in 1982.
An opera venue, not an opera house
In the evening the nave becomes a concert hall for three companies: I Virtuosi dell'Opera di Roma, Opera e Lirica and Opera in Roma. The programmes are arias evenings, a concert staging of La Traviata with singers, a small orchestra and some costume, a Three Tenors tribute, Vivaldi's Four Seasons and the Christmas and New Year concerts.
None of these is a staged production at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, whose season runs autumn to early summer before the company moves outdoors for the summer festival. The church concerts fill the gap: sung in Italian with English introductions, about 80 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes, and bookable the same week. If you want the full theatre, see our guide to opera in Rome instead.
What you see inside St Paul's Within the Walls
The building rewards arriving half an hour early. Here is the walking order.

The nave and the Burne-Jones mosaics
Enter from Via Nazionale into a nave of striped brick and stone with stained glass by Clayton and Bell, the English firm influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, telling the life of St Paul. Walk towards the chancel and look up. Four mosaics by Edward Burne-Jones, the largest works of the Pre-Raphaelite artist, cover the arches and the apse.
In order you pass The Annunciation and The Tree of Life, both completed in 1894, then the apse semi-dome with Christ Enthroned in the Heavenly Jerusalem of 1885. Christ is flanked by archangels with an empty space for Lucifer's vacated position. Lower on the apse wall is The Earthly Paradise, finished in 1907 by Burne-Jones's assistant Thomas Rooke after the artist's death, with figures modelled on contemporary people. American artist George Breck, who studied in Rome, made mosaics here too.
How the concert seating works
Seating is rows of chairs in the nave, sold by price category. Front rows cost more. The arias listing sells categories A, B and VIP, and VIP adds skip-the-line entry. There is no raked auditorium and no box, so sightlines stay simple and a B seat still hears everything.
Viator tickets are collected at the church box office from one hour before the start. Arrive when it opens, collect your ticket, then spend the time with the mosaics. Smart casual is the listed dress code, matching the rules for other church concerts in our dress code guide.
Hours, dress and quiet times
The practical rules for a concert night at the church.
Opening and concert times
Daytime visiting hours are not stated, so check the church's own information before planning a daytime look. What the listings do fix is the evening: the Opera e Lirica La Traviata runs 20:30 to about 22:30, arias and Three Tenors evenings last about 90 minutes, and the Christmas concert runs 80 minutes. Box office collection for Viator tickets opens one hour before each concert.
Every listing allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, which makes booking early low risk. The New Year concert has two dates only each year and sells out first of all the church's concerts.
Dress and behaviour
The listed dress code is smart casual. This is a working Episcopal church, so concerts start after the last service and you should treat the space accordingly: keep voices low before the music begins and stay in your chair category. Photos during the performance are not part of the deal.
For a church visit by day, cover shoulders and knees as you would in any Roman church. If you are pairing the concert with dinner, read dinner and opera in Rome for places near Via Nazionale.
Getting there
Via Nazionale 16a sits between Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza Venezia, which makes the church easy to reach from most of central Rome.
Metro, train and on foot
The Repubblica metro stop on line A is the closest, about 5 minutes on foot (our estimate). Termini station is also within walking distance, useful if you arrive in Rome by train on the day of the concert. Walk down Via Nazionale from Repubblica and the church appears on your right at number 16a, corner of Via Napoli.
The Teatro dell'Opera di Roma is about 5 minutes away (our estimate), so an opera-house night and a church-concert night can share the same hotel. Our where to stay for the opera guide covers the district.
Booking the right evening
Concert dates vary by company and season, so check the dates on the listing before you fix dinner plans. The table below compares the programmes at a glance.
| Concert | Company | Length | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| La Traviata | I Virtuosi dell'Opera di Roma | About 2 hours 10 minutes | $45 |
| La Traviata | Opera e Lirica | 2 hours | $39 |
| La Traviata | I Virtuosi (Viator listing) | 2 hours 20 minutes | $28.34 |
| Opera arias | I Virtuosi dell'Opera di Roma | 1.5 hours | $28 |
| Three Tenors tribute | Opera e Lirica | 1.5 hours | $37.41 |
| Three Tenors with ballet | Opera in Roma | 1.5 hours | $28.34 |
| Vivaldi Four Seasons | Opera in Roma Baroque Orchestra | 1.5 hours | $45 |
| Christmas concert | Opera e Lirica | 80 minutes | $33 |
| New Year concert | I Virtuosi dell'Opera di Roma | 2 hours | $39 |
How much time to give it
Three routings depending on how the church fits your evening.
Choose your routing
The church itself needs little time, but the concert anchors the evening. If you only want the mosaics, come by day or arrive an hour before the concert while the box office is open. If the concert is the plan, eat early on Via Nazionale and be at the door when collection starts.
The routings below are our estimates. The New Year concert is the one case where you should arrive well ahead, since it sells out first and latecomers may find the best seats gone.
Three ways to plan the evening
| Routing | Time needed | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| Mosaics only, daytime visit | 10 to 15 minutes, our estimate | Daytime hours are not stated, so check the church's information or combine the look with the hour before a concert |
| Arias evening, 90 minutes | About 2 hours with ticket collection, our estimate | Collect at the box office one hour before, study the Burne-Jones apse, then take a B seat if budget matters |
| Full Traviata night | About 3 hours with collection and a pre-concert meal, our estimate | The Opera e Lirica show starts 20:30 sharp, eat before 19:30 nearby and allow the walk from Repubblica |

About 25 min walk (our estimate) Read the guideSt Paul's Within the Walls: questions
What is St. Paul's within the walls?
It is an Episcopal church, the American Church in Rome, and the first Protestant church built inside the city. George Edmund Street designed it in striped brick and stone and it was completed in 1880. By night its nave hosts opera concerts, including La Traviata and the Three Tenors.
Is there a seating chart for the church concerts?
Not a printed one. Seating is rows of chairs in the nave sold by price category, with the front rows costing more. The arias concert sells categories A, B and VIP, and VIP adds skip-the-line entry. Any category hears the singers well in this small space.
How do I collect my tickets?
Tickets on the Viator listings are collected at the church box office from one hour before the concert starts. Bring your booking confirmation and arrive at opening so you can look at the Burne-Jones mosaics beforehand. Free cancellation is allowed up to 24 hours before the start.
What does traviata mean in Italian?
La traviata means the wayward woman. Verdi's three-act opera was originally titled Violetta after its main character, a courtesan, and is based on Alexandre Dumas fils's La Dame aux camélias. It premiered at La Fenice in Venice in 1853 and is now among the most performed operas anywhere. Hear it in Rome at La Traviata at St. Paul's.
Can I hear Vivaldi at St Paul's Within the Walls?
Yes. The Opera in Roma Baroque Orchestra plays Vivaldi's Four Seasons in the church, a 1.5 hour concert with no singing, from $45. For more baroque evenings across the city see our guide to classical concerts in Rome.
Are the Three Tenors concerts the real thing?
They are tributes. The original Three Tenors concert was sung by Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti at the Baths of Caracalla in 1990. The church's Three Tenors evenings are performed by today's tenors of Opera e Lirica and Opera in Roma, with Nessun dorma and O sole mio on the programme. Details in Three Tenors Rome.
What should I wear to a concert at the church?
Smart casual, which is the listed dress code for the church's concerts. It is a working church, so modest dress fits the setting too. For the theatre's stricter opening-night rules see our Rome opera dress code guide.
Which concert should I pick if it is my first visit?
Our pick is the La Traviata concert staging by Opera e Lirica at 20:30, a complete opera for $39 in the mosaicked nave. If two hours of opera feels long, choose the arias evening instead, about 90 minutes from $28 with some of the best reviews of any concert here.
Prices, hours and terms are set by the venue or operator and confirmed at checkout.
