Rome opera tickets come in three kinds: a seat at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, an open-air seat at the summer festival, and a concert ticket for the opera evenings in churches and palaces that run all year. This guide compares prices and lengths so you can book the right evening. The three bookable options in the tickets table below are ours to sell. For every venue, see our guide to the opera houses in Rome.
Quick answer Which Rome opera ticket to buy
The Teatro dell'Opera di Roma sells its own season seats from $24.50 (€22) in the upper gallery, online at operaroma.it or at the box office. In summer the company moves to the open-air festival at the Baths of Caracalla. On any night of the year you can also book an opera concert, such as La Traviata at St Paul's Within the Walls from $45.

Booking a Seat at the Rome Opera House
The Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, opened in November 1880 as the Teatro Costanzi and seated today at 1,560, sells every seat of its indoor season itself.
Where to buy
The house sells tickets through its own website operaroma.it, at the box office on Piazza Beniamino Gigli 7 and through TicketOne. Same-day tickets go on sale at the venue from one hour before the performance. The box office is open Monday to Saturday 10:00-18:00 and Sunday 09:00-13:30.
The indoor season runs autumn to early summer. The 2026-27 season opens with Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, conducted by Michele Mariotti, from 27 November to 5 December. For the shape of the whole year, see our Rome opera house guide. The company also plays a second, smaller indoor venue, the Teatro Nazionale on Via del Viminale 51, a few minutes from the main house.
Which seat to pick
The gap in the price list is wide. A repeat-night stalls seat costs $139.40 (€125) against $24.50 (€22) in the top gallery rows. The cheapest stalls seat costs roughly seven times the cheapest opera seat in the house. If budget decides, the gallery of this horseshoe room is a real bargain: the acoustics were designed as a resonance chamber by the original architect Achille Sfondrini, and the upper reaches of an Italian opera house hear well.
One rule matters more than the seat number. Once the performance starts nobody is taken to the stalls or the numbered gallery and balcony seats. Latecomers wait in the foyer until a break. Arrive early, or book a seat where a partial view hurts less.
House rules to know
Evening dress is requested on opening nights and premieres only. On other nights there is no written rule. Photos and recording are banned, phones may not be used in the auditorium, and umbrellas, hats, bags and cameras go to the cloakroom. For what to wear at every kind of Roman evening, see our Rome opera dress code page.
You can see the room without a ticket to a show. Guided tours last about one hour, in Italian and English, and take in the Foyer, the Stalls, the Royal Box, the Gallery and the theatre museum. They run step-free except the Royal Box and Gallery. There are no tours on public holidays, and the schedule changes during production work.
Summer: Open-Air Opera Tickets
From early summer the opera company leaves its indoor house and plays outdoors. Those seats are also sold by the theatre only.

The Caracalla festival and the Circus Maximus
The summer festival is run by the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma and its seats are sold by the theatre alone. We sell no summer opera seat, so treat the festival prices as a matter for operaroma.it.
Open-air opera at the Baths of Caracalla began on 1 August 1937 with Lucia di Lammermoor, and Aida is the opera most often staged there. The Baths themselves opened in AD 216 under Caracalla. In summer 2026 the Baths were under restoration, so the festival moved to the Circus Maximus from 29 June to 31 July, with Verdi's Aida on six July nights, Cranko's Romeo and Juliet by the theatre's ballet, and Orff's Carmina Burana closing the run. The first Three Tenors concert, with Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti conducted by Zubin Mehta, was sung at the Baths on 7 July 1990.
The full picture is on our Baths of Caracalla opera page. To walk the ruins in daylight, our readers book the Caracalla Baths & Circus Maximus tour, an hour and a half with an archaeologist.
Weather and same-day seats
Open-air nights carry two rules worth knowing before you pay. First, a performance is never cancelled before its start time. The theatre may delay or suspend it for up to 100 minutes, and if it is stopped after the first act there is no refund. Bring a light layer for after midnight, because summer evenings cool late.
Second, same-day seats are sold at the open-air venue from 90 minutes before the start. The Circus Maximus is about a 10-minute walk from the Baths (our estimate), and the Circo Massimo metro stop on line B serves both. Everything else about the two sites is in our Caracalla guide.
Opera on Any Night: The Bookable Concerts
When the theatre is dark, or the season prices do not fit, Rome has a nightly trade in opera concerts in churches, palaces and on terraces.
What these concerts are
Be clear about the format before you book. These are concerts, not staged productions. The Traviata at St Paul's Within the Walls is a concert staging with singers, a small orchestra and some costume, sung in Italian with English introductions. The arias evenings give you Verdi, Puccini, Mozart and Neapolitan songs with tenor, soprano and piano or a small ensemble, running from 50 minutes to about an hour and a half.
The Three Tenors programmes you will see advertised are tributes by today's tenors, not Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti. For the difference between the listings, see our Three Tenors in Rome page, and for the whole church-and-palace scene, opera concerts in Rome.
Where they happen and what to compare
St Paul's Within the Walls, the American Church on Via Nazionale, is the busiest venue: a striped-brick Episcopal church by George Edmund Street with Burne-Jones mosaics, about five minutes on foot from both the Repubblica metro stop and the opera house (our estimate). The Palazzo della Cancelleria concert is the only ordinary way inside a Renaissance palace that belongs to the Holy See and is otherwise closed. The arias concert at a small Waldensian church puts you within a few rows of the singers.
Compare on three things: length, seating and setting. Seating at St Paul's is by price category in rows of chairs, the front rows costing more, and Viator tickets are collected at the church box office from one hour before. The dress note everywhere is smart casual, and at working churches concerts start after the last service. If you want music before or after dinner instead, our opera dinner and classical concerts pages cover the rooftop and candlelight options.
Cheap Opera Tickets in Rome
There are three honest ways to cut the price of an opera evening in Rome, and none of them involves a queue at midnight.
The gallery and repeat nights
At the theatre, the cheapest opera seat is gallery rows 4-8 on a repeat performance, $24.50 (€22). Move up to gallery rows 1-3 and it is $27.90 (€25). The same stalls seat jumps to $139.40 (€125), and a premiere pushes it to $178.40 (€160). Ballet is cheaper than opera in the same house: $22.30 (€20) in the gallery against $83.60 (€75) in the stalls.
So the decision is simple. Paying for the stalls buys proximity, not audibility. A gallery ticket plus an early arrival, since latecomers cannot reach numbered seats after the start, is the value play for a Rome opera house evening.
Concerts instead of productions
The bookable concerts start lower than any theatre seat. The 50-minute arias evening at the Waldensian church is from $38, and the hour at Palazzo della Cancelleria is from $67. A whole Traviata in concert staging runs from $45, less than a seventh of a premiere stalls seat at the theatre.
For more ways to trim the evening, including aperitivo-included formats, see our roundup of opera concerts in Rome. If your dates are fixed, the cheapest ticket in this guide is a daytime one: the guided tour of the theatre itself at $16.73 (€15), which gets you the Royal Box, the Stalls and the theatre museum in about an hour.
Planning the Evening and the Season
A few scheduling facts decide most itineraries: the season calendar, the dress rules and where to sleep near the curtain.
The calendar, month by month
The indoor season at the opera house runs autumn to early summer, and the company moves outdoors for the summer festival. That means every month of the year has live opera somewhere in Rome, but the venue changes. In summer 2026 the festival played the Circus Maximus while the Baths were restored.
For fixed dates in the concert world, check the dates on the listing before you build an evening around a venue. Some concerts are seasonal by design: the church Christmas concert is December only, and the New Year's concert plays two dates a year, on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day, and sells out first among the church's concerts. The full theatre picture is on our Rome opera house page and the wider scene in our guide to theatres in Rome.
Dress, transport and a bed
Dress codes differ by venue and it is worth one minute of planning. Evening dress is requested at the theatre on opening nights and premieres only. Church and palace concerts list smart casual. At Sant'Andrea della Valle, the church where Act 1 of Tosca is set, cover shoulders and knees. All of it is summarised on our dress code page.
The theatre sits at Piazza Beniamino Gigli 7, about five minutes on foot from Repubblica metro (line A) and about ten from Termini station (our estimate). St Paul's Within the Walls is about five minutes from the theatre (our estimate), so a concert there pairs easily with a season performance on the same evening. If you want to walk to the curtain from your hotel, see where to stay in Rome for the opera.
